Third Saturday Gardening

Did you know that the Creation Care Ministry hosts Third Saturday Gardening on the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon?
We have been wondering what our outdoor sacred space could look like if we started tending it as part of an ecosystem. We don’t know the answer to that yet, but we’re willing to give it a try.
If this sounds like something that interests you, then come and join us as we work with this fragile Earth, our island home. Our next work day will be Saturday, January 21. There are many tasks that vary from digging and chopping to weeding and carrying logs. Bring your favorite tools and find a job that suits you.
Someone will be at the church—at the end of the parking lot, near the edge of the forest—from 9 a.m. to noon. Come when you’re ready, and stay for as long as you wish. Everyone has things that have to get done on a Saturday, so don’t feel you need to work all morning.
The goal of all this work is to make space for the native plants to thrive. The whole ecosystem depends on the services of these plants. Bring water, and drink plenty of it—it’s hot out there! Gatorade works wonders. Bring a snack if you like. Your presence and effort are all that matter! You don’t have to be a Master Gardener to help. For more information please contact Margaret Bain.
Safety:
Wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring gloves.
There are deer in the forest, so there are likely ticks too. Please use a bug spray with Deet in it.
Please remember it is against the law in Virginia to kill a snake, so be watchful and respectful of these slithery neighbors. They are important members of the ecosystem.
Poison ivy is native to Virginia and part of the ecosystem. Pull it up (carefully!) if it is next to the path, if that is something you feel you can do, but otherwise, keep away from it. Ask for help identifying it if you aren’t certain what it looks like.
We don’t have a first-aid kit on site, so be careful.
