(Sponsored by Becoming Beloved Community)
Our Becoming Beloved Community ministry is launching a book and movie club this summer. We will meet monthly, alternating between discussing books and movies, featuring titles that will deepen our understanding of racial justice. We plan to include fiction and nonfiction, drama and documentaries.
Our first session will be Monday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. No registration required.
We will discuss the book An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. The book was a Best-of-the-Year selection by The New York Times Book Review, NPR, and The Washington Post, among others. It received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, which said:
“This novel is peopled by vividly realized, individual characters and driven by interpersonal drama, but it is also very much about being black in contemporary America. This is, at its heart, a love story, but a love story warped by racial injustice. And, in it, Jones suggests that racial injustice haunts the African-American story. Subtle, well-crafted, and powerful.”
If you can’t find the book at the library, pick up a copy from our local independent bookstore, Bards Alley bookshop (110 Church Street NW, Vienna; 571-459-2653; or Amazon.
